Momjan - Momiano: "Libero Sinkovic... the story of a Noble man from Momjan... a story of tradition, home made food, Muscatel, and family hospitality... "

THE STORY OF A NOBLE FAMILY… THE STORY OF SAN MAURO AND JACK… OF MOMJAN (MOMIANO)… AND ABOVE ALL THE STORY OF MR.LIBERO SINKOVIC…

SAN MAURO is located above Momjan… it is like a guardian of the village…

Why I am saying that?

In the part dedicated to Momjan I presented the story of family Rota and the ruins of the Old Castle.

In 1548 Simone Rota bought the castle and his family lived in it until 1835.

There is one other story that was more important to me in the whole story and is the fact that in 1880, Stefano Rota found in his family library a copy of one of the most important Istrian medieval legal documents, Survey of Istrian Land Boundaries (“Istarski razvod”). That legal document was written in the 13th century in three languages: Croatian, Italian and German.

Mr. Libero Sinkovic is descending from a noble Sinkovic family which traces of nobility in Istria dates back into the mid of the 17th century… Mr. Libero shared with me only part of his family story that after so many generations and many different changes is not an easy exercise to trace… it is not easy as also Mate Balote in his “Tijesna Zemlja” – the Narrow Land explains…

It is not known if his ancestors have reached SAN MAURO from Zagorje or from Dalmatia but there are several stories I enjoyed listening that morning Mr. Libero Sinkovic… I enjoyed listing him speaking to me both… a bit in Croatia and a bit in perfect Venetian dialect…

…and there was one story that made me think of intergenerational responsibility and the Old Olive Tree we plant during the Smrikva Bowl…

...it was a story related to some old family furniture and was the story about how is not so easy to pass the knowledge to new generations…

When he was telling part of his family story I thought how every person is born without knowing anything about life on this earth and it is the responsibility of every generation to understand and to learn to preserve all that each of us is born with, so as to possibly improve upon it prior to departing…

Intergenerational responsibility alone can allow future generations to enjoy the beauty of life, the sunsets and the seasons of the earth…

There is an ancient proverb saying: “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors: we borrow it from our children."… and that morning spent with Mr. Libero Sinkovic I felt that message in many words we shared...

WHAT CAN YOU ENJOY AT SINKOVIC’s PROPERTY SAN MAURO?

At SAN MAURO I would start with a unique family atmosphere and love for the nature all the members of family Sinkovic has…

Mr. Libero his wife Mrs. Dora, and sons Patrick and Sergej Sinkovic, will show you through anything you taste how successfully they upheld and cultivated the tradition of grape growing, wine making, brandy and olive oil production, as well as various fruits and vegetable crops their family does for more than 350 years…

They incorporated in the 1990’s this tradition with tourism demand, which enabled them to offer local Istrian specialties… and in their cuisine, among others, you will also find truffles - "black diamonds"…
